For decades, Victor has dedicated himself to strengthening theatre in Washington. As a supporter, as a champion, and especially as the longstanding chair of theatreWashington's Board of Directors, he has always believed fervently in theatre's power to transform a community.
Through his service as theatreWashington’s board chair from 1991 to 2014, Victor has been instrumental in advocating for the entire Washington theatre community. He played a leading role in the area’s artistic renaissance, which saw the number of professional theatres grow exponentially over three decades, creating a city that now supports more than 200 productions annually.
Throughout his decades of work in the Washington area, Victor brought his artistic expertise and business acumen to boards and galas of many organizations including The Washington Ballet, Studio Theatre, Signature Theatre, the Charlin Jazz Festival, The Kennedy Center Community and Friends Board, The Theatre Lab School for the Performing Arts, and the Woolly Mammoth Theatre.
His biggest investment was in his longstanding thoughtful leadership of the theatreWashington board. He led the establishment of the Helen Hayes Awards as a nationally recognized honor to theatre artists and institutions and an elegant annual evening to celebrate the accomplishments of the community. He served as board chair when the organization changed its name and mandate in 2011 from the Helen Hayes Awards to theatreWashington. theatreWashington entered the new decade as a reimangined service organization to the flourishing theatre community.
Thirty years ago there were twenty theatres. Today, there are more than 90 providing over 600 productions, readings, and festivals each year. Theatres are a driving force for the revitalization of Penn Quarter, 14th Street, Shirlington, H Street, and downtown Bethesda. Washington is recognized nationally as one of the best places in the nation to experience a variety of professional theater, second only to New York City. The theaters serve the region as cultural hubs, and a workplace to thousands of theatre artists and administrators, many of whom make their home in the Washington D.C. region.
A ubiquitous presence at Washington area theatres large and small, Victor Shargai's ability to gather and inspire artists, audiences, and patrons is grounded in his exhuberance for the theater, philanthropic generosity, and an abundance of personal charisma.
